Introduction: why the cheeks matter more than the wrinkles
Most people in their thirties, forties and fifties arrive at a clinic wanting to “do something” about the lines around their mouth. They rarely realise that those lines are almost always a downstream effect of something else entirely: volume loss higher up in the face. When the cheek flattens, everything beneath it drops by a few millimetres. The nasolabial folds deepen. The corners of the mouth soften. The lower face starts to look heavier than it used to.
This is why cheek fillers are the single most transformative dermal filler treatment we deliver at our Fitzrovia clinic, and equally the one where the difference between “done well” and “done badly” is the most visible. A well-placed cheek filler lifts the mid-face, restores youthful architecture and makes the rest of the face settle back into a balanced position. A badly placed one makes a patient look wide, puffy, or as if they are holding marbles in their cheeks.
This guide explains what cheek fillers are, how they actually work, what the Sheridan France approach looks like, and how to choose a practitioner who will give you lift without telling the world you have had something done.
What cheek fillers are and why the mid-face matters
Cheek fillers are typically a firmer grade of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel placed in specific anatomical planes of the mid-face: usually deep, close to or on top of the cheekbone itself, rather than superficially into the skin. The goal is to restore the underlying structural support the face loses as the bone, fat pads and ligaments of the mid-face change over time.
There are three structural changes cheek filler addresses:
- Bone volume change. With age, the cheekbone and the surrounding bone resorb slightly, so the scaffold the skin sits on becomes a little smaller.
- Fat-pad migration. The cheek’s deep fat pads shift downwards, which is why patients notice that their jawline has “softened” even though the change started at the cheek.
- Ligament loosening. Connective tissue that tethers the mid-face to the underlying bone stretches slightly with time.
Replacing volume precisely where it was lost lifts the skin that rests on top of that scaffold. That is why the lower face appears refreshed even though the injection was somewhere else entirely.
What cheek fillers are not for
Cheek fillers are not a skin-quality treatment. If the surface of the skin has lost elasticity, is heavily sun damaged, or has deep pigmentation, fillers will not change that; you may need additional skin treatments such as mesotherapy, microneedling or chemical peels in parallel. Patients who are a better fit for surgical facelifts (significant skin laxity, major structural descent) will be told so honestly at their consultation.
The Sheridan France approach to cheek fillers
Our approach to cheek filler comes down to two principles: less product than you’d expect, placed more precisely than you’d guess.

Step one, full-face assessment
No patient is ever treated for cheek filler in isolation. Your cheeks are assessed against your lower face, your chin projection, your jawline, your brow position and your lip ratio. Adding volume to the mid-face affects how the rest of the face reads. Sometimes a patient arrives wanting cheek filler and leaves the consultation with a plan that centres on chin or jawline instead, because that is what will actually balance the face. Our dermal fillers pillar guide explains this whole-face thinking in more detail.
Step two, strategic, structural placement
Cheek filler at Sheridan France is injected at a deep tissue level, on or near the periosteum (the layer immediately over the cheekbone), using a blunt-tipped cannula or a needle depending on the anatomical zone. This approach reduces bruising, maximises lift and gives the most natural-looking result. Patients leave with a subtly lifted, refreshed appearance, not with “cheeks” that announce themselves before the patient walks into the room.
Step three, aftercare and review
Mild swelling or bruising for a few days is normal. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. A two-week follow-up is offered so any minor refinement can be made once the product has fully settled. This follow-up is part of the service, not an optional extra.
How long do cheek fillers last?
Structural cheek fillers tend to last longer than filler placed in high-movement areas. In most patients, results hold for 12 to 18 months, and in some cases longer depending on the product, the anatomy and the patient’s metabolism. Many of our patients choose to book a light refresh once a year rather than waiting for the entire result to fade.
Are cheek fillers safe?
Cheek filler has a strong safety profile in the hands of a medically qualified practitioner working with regulated HA products. The cheek is an anatomically complex area (important blood vessels and nerves run through the mid-face), which is exactly why this treatment should not be delegated to a non-medical injector. A nurse prescriber, dentist or doctor with deep anatomical training is the right person for this job. Minor short-term side effects include bruising, swelling and tenderness, which typically resolve within a few days. All HA filler is fully dissolvable using hyaluronidase.

Frequently asked questions
Will cheek fillers make my face look wider?
Not when they are placed correctly. The goal of cheek filler is to lift the mid-face, not widen it. A flattened cheek placed wide will look chipmunky; a structurally placed cheek will look sculpted.
How soon will I see results after cheek filler?
Most patients see an immediate lift, with the final result settling over roughly two weeks as mild swelling resolves and the product integrates with the surrounding tissue.
Is cheek filler painful?
Topical numbing cream and a built-in local anaesthetic within modern HA products make the procedure well tolerated. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure rather than pain.
Can cheek fillers replace a surgical facelift?
For patients with early to moderate volume loss and good skin elasticity, cheek filler can dramatically refresh the mid-face and is often described as a “non-surgical facelift.” Patients with significant skin laxity or major structural descent may be better suited to a surgical consultation, and we will tell you honestly if that is the case.
How much do cheek fillers cost in London?
Pricing depends on the amount of product appropriate to your anatomy. A personalised quote is given at your consultation so you are never paying for product you do not need.
Every face is different. Results depend on individual anatomy, lifestyle and aftercare. All dermal filler treatments at Sheridan France are delivered only following a face-to-face consultation.
