Introduction: the concern most lip filler patients arrive with
Almost every patient who walks into our Fitzrovia clinic asking about lip fillers starts the conversation the same way: “I want them to look nice, but I don’t want them to look done.” It is the most reasonable request in aesthetics, and it is also the one most commonly ignored elsewhere. Social media has normalised a very particular style of lip (projected, flat along the top, over-filled at the corners) and a lot of people quietly worry that is the only result on offer.
It is not. Good lip filler is the least noticeable kind of lip filler. It restores volume that has been lost, it rebalances lips that were always slightly asymmetrical, it softens the fine lines that can appear on the upper lip with age, and it does it all without anyone being able to say which feature changed. That is what this article is about: what modern, medically led lip filler treatment looks like in central London, how it should be approached, and how to avoid the pitfalls that give the whole category a bad name.
What lip fillers actually do
Lip fillers are injections of soft, hyaluronic acid (HA)-based gel placed into or around the lips to change their shape, volume, hydration or definition. The right HA lip filler sits softly within the tissue, attracts water to keep the lips hydrated-looking, and feels natural to the touch.
There are a few reasons patients seek lip filler:
- Naturally thin lips that the patient has always felt self-conscious about
- Age-related thinning where the upper lip has flattened and the philtrum column has lengthened
- Asymmetry between the left and right or upper and lower lip
- Loss of definition around the border of the lip (the vermilion edge)
- Fine vertical lines on the upper lip (sometimes called “barcode lines”)
What lip fillers are not for
Lip fillers are not a facelift. They cannot lift deep marionette lines or drooping corners of the mouth in isolation; that is structural work that often requires support at the cheek or chin (read our dermal fillers pillar guide for the broader picture). They are also not a one-size treatment: a patient with naturally thin lips in her late twenties is a completely different brief from a patient in her fifties with age-related volume loss, and the technique should reflect that.
The Sheridan France approach to lip filler
Every lip treatment at Sheridan France begins with a detailed conversation about what the patient actually wants and, just as important, what they do not want. This is where technique meets taste.

Step one, the consultation
Your lips are assessed in relation to the whole face: the shape of your jaw, the position of your cupid’s bow, your smile, your upper-to-lower lip ratio. We look at photographs of you smiling, at rest and speaking, because lips that look balanced at rest can look unbalanced in animation. We also talk about lifestyle (how visible you are professionally, what occasions you are building towards) so the plan respects your real life.
Step two, precise placement, not volume
The mistake that produces the classic overfilled lip is to inject product where volume looks good on camera rather than where the lip has actually lost structure. Our approach is the opposite. Product is placed strategically along the vermilion border to redefine the shape, in targeted points within the body of the lip to restore lost volume, and only in quantities the individual anatomy can support. Less is almost always more.
Step three, aftercare and review
There is minimal downtime with modern HA lip filler. Some mild swelling for 24–72 hours is normal and part of the body’s healing response. Most patients are back to normal activities the same day. A two-week follow-up is offered so we can see the final settled result and make minor refinements if needed; this is part of the cost of treatment at our clinic, not an optional extra.
How long do lip fillers last?
Lip fillers tend to metabolise faster than fillers placed in more structural areas of the face, because the lips are constantly in motion. In most patients, results last between six and twelve months. Patients who maintain their lips usually book a light top-up once or twice a year rather than allowing the result to fade completely. That maintenance pattern also tends to produce more consistent, less conspicuous results over time.
Are lip fillers safe?
HA lip filler from a qualified nurse prescriber using regulated product has a very strong safety record. The most common side effects are temporary bruising, mild swelling and short-term tenderness. Rarer complications (vascular events, nodules, infection) exist but are significantly reduced when treatment is performed by a medically trained practitioner who understands facial anatomy, uses sterile technique and has a plan (and the products) to manage complications immediately. This is not the category to book with the cheapest option.
All HA lip filler at Sheridan France is fully dissolvable using hyaluronidase, should a patient ever want the product reversed.

Frequently asked questions
Will lip fillers make my lips look fake?
Not in the hands of a skilled injector using the right amount and placement. Our entire approach is built around not being able to tell; friends should just think you look well-rested.
How painful is lip filler treatment?
A topical numbing cream is applied, and the hyaluronic acid products we use contain a built-in local anaesthetic. Most patients describe the discomfort as mild and short-lived.
Will I need to take time off work?
No. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. You may notice mild swelling for 24–72 hours, which is a normal part of healing.
Can lip fillers be dissolved if I don’t like them?
Yes. HA lip fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. We very rarely need to do this, but the option reassures patients who are nervous about a permanent change.
How much do lip fillers cost at Sheridan France?
Pricing is discussed transparently at your consultation, based on the amount of product that is actually appropriate for your lips. We never recommend more than you need. Current prices are listed on our lip fillers treatment page.
Every patient is different. Results vary depending on anatomy, lifestyle and aftercare. All dermal filler treatments at Sheridan France are delivered only after a face-to-face consultation.
